What is the theme?
Words can connect us—or keep us apart. They can be spoken, written, whispered, translated, misunderstood, or left painfully unsaid.
For the 2027–28 Ember & Vine Writing Contest, we’re looking for stories about the words exchanged between people and the silences that shape their lives. Write about a letter that changes everything, a conversation remembered differently by two people, a secret finally spoken, a language barrier, a promise, a confession, or the words someone never found the courage to say.
Interpret the theme as broadly and creatively as you’d like. We want to discover what happens in the space between one person and another—and the words that bridge, deepen, or divide that distance.
My entry isn’t written yet. Can I still take advantage of the discount?
Yes. You may purchase your entry anytime and then submit your work by April 1.
My story is longer than 3,000 words. Will it be disqualified?
Yes.
Does the title count as part of the 3,000-word limit?
No.
What are stories judged on?
All entries are judged on criteria that includes characterization, plot, theme, setting and atmosphere, mechanics, voice, style, and emotional resonance/passion. Team Members of Ember & Vine will evaluate each entry based on publishing industry standards.
Can entries be poems?
Yes. But be aware that entries are judged on traditional short story and essay elements such as character, setting, and plot. We may open a poetry competition in the future, but this contest is aiming for narrative stories that explore the theme of Ember & Vine.
Can my story contain chapters?
Yes, as long as you stay below the total 3,000-word limit.
How much violence and/or swearing can a story have?
We do not censor content for the stories.
Do you accept entries with drawings?
No. Unfortunately the contest is unable to effectively evaluate stories requiring illustrations at this time.
The submission form asks for an alternative email address. Is an alternative email address required?
An alternative email address is not required. We ask for an alternative address primarily to help prevent any issue with contacting authors.
Can I get a refund?
Unfortunately we cannot issue refunds.
